St Michael Holiday Tourney Game #2 St Matthew vs St Michael 12/26

Game #2 of the Holiday Tournament. Cameron had quite the cheering section with Pat and Johnny coming to watch (Thanks you two!). They may have to come more often. Cameron had 8 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. The team played better but fell to St Michael 23-20. Their last game of the tournament is Sunday afternoon at noon against St Brendan.

St Michael Holiday Tournament Game #1 St Matthew vs St Paul

Holidays Hoops! St Matthew entered 2 teams into the St Michael 5th grade holiday tournament. Cameron was put on the team that his regular season coach was coaching. 8 kids up on his, but 2 were not there for the first game. This made for some tired kids in the 2nd half, as a close game got out of hand. The Mustangs only managed 2 points and fell 30-11 to St Paul. Next game later this evening at 7:00 against one of the St Michael teams. Hope the other two are there for this game.

Christmas @ Mom's 2009

A fun afternoon with a lot of food and a lot of laughs. Played Cameron's new UNO Flash game. It was fun. Missed Heather and her family. Merry Christmas!

Christmas Morning 2009

It's a rainy, very windy morning. The boys let us sleep until 7:30 which was much appreciated. Very nice to have Marsha's mom here for the holidays to see the boys open gifts. Same song and dance. The boys got way too much stuff and I want to go back to bed. Merry Christmas everyone!

Game #3 St Matthew Mustangs Gold Vs St Brigid

Mustangs back in action for their last game before the holidays. Cameron started at point guard. St Brigid had a very active press and were very physical (with little help from the refs). At times the game resembled a hockey game instead of basketball. You could tell the boys had not worked much against a press as of yet. Hard to get the offensive flow going and the Mustangs fell 25-18. They fall to 2-1 (1-1 in their division). Next game for his team is Sunday Jan 10th. Cameron is playing on one of the two St Matthew tournament teams in the St Michael Holiday tournament next weekend. Should be fun.

Game #2 St Matthew Gold vs St Michael Gold 12/12/09

Game #2 at St Paul today. Was hoping we would be in the new gym, but no such luck. The boys did a great job on the boards again today. Cameron had 2 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds and the Mustangs went to 2-0 with a 19-9 win over St Michael Gold. Next Saturday back at St Paul against the dreaded St Brigid.

Saturday, December 5, 2009

St Matthew Gold vs St Timothy White 12/5/09 Game #1

First game of the season brings excitement and the great unknown. The Mustangs took the court and did a real good job on the boards. Cameron (wearing #55) played a lot at the point. He had a few rebounds, a few steals and a few assists. His shots did not fall, but his team won 24-16. All 4 5th grade St Matthew teams played at St Catherine today. Cameron's team was the last to play and the win avoided to dreaded 0 fer for the Mustangs. Good luck to the other three teams in their divisions. Next game next Saturday against St Michael Gold @ St Paul. Great start Mustangs!!

St Matthew vs St Cecilia Game 7

The boys saved their best game for last. Jumping all over the St Cecilia Crusaders. Cameron played 3 plays at QB on the first drive and a lot at free safety as well. Mustangs win 33-0 and finish the season 2-5. Thanks to the coaches for all their hard work. Great job boys!! MUSTANG PRIDE!

St Matthew vs Western Knights At Ready HS Game 6

Sunny day but a cold wind for a noon start. Game 6 for the Mustangs got off to a great start. Cameron was one of the captains and they won the toss, took the ball and drove 65 yards for the score and took a 7-0 lead. Cameron played some at QB, even was under center for one of the successful extra points, and some at free safety. The Mustangs took the 7-0 lead into the half. The continued to dominate on both sides of the ball in the second half and scored once in the 3rd quarter and once in the 4th. The Knights avoided the shutout by scoring late in the 4th quarter. Final St Matthew 20 Western Knights 7. Mustangs go to 1-5 and wrap up the season next Sunday at home against St Agatha.

Game #5 Mustangs at OLPH

Nice sunny day for the Mustangs only Saturday game of the year. The camera was forgotten at home. The Mustangs only came close to scoring once. The defense played better but they came up short 6-0. Cameron played some free safety and one play at nose guard. Next game Sunday 10/18 against the Western Knights @ Ready high school.

Another Playoff Game for Griffin

A very cold morning (Thanks AA commish, those Mondays and Tuesdays off during fall were worth it..NOT) for Griffin's playoff game. Not much scoring early. The storm led 3-1 going to the bottom of the third. The Rattlers scored three and took a 4-3 lead. The Storm tied it in the 4th and that is how it stayed into extra innings. The walls came down in the top of the 8th as the Storm pushed across 7 runs to win 11-4. Great season for the Timber Rattlers!

Much Needed Win and Big Hit for Griffin!!

Fall playoffs continue for Griffin and the Timber Rattlers. The team had trouble getting the bats going. Evan Wolf kept them in the game by only allowing 1 run in three innings on the mound. Griffin had a huge hit, a double in the 5th inning to drive in a run. Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the 6th, the Rattlers rallied for 4 runs and stayed alive for at least one more game on Wednesday. Nothing could spoil this night, although electronic communication tried to. So nice to leave the park where darn near everything was good for the first time in a long time. Griffin got a big hit, his team won and him and I smiled and jammed all the way home!

Mustangs Vs Eastern Green Wave @ Hartley

Nice day for football. Boys got to play on Hartley's field. Very cool turf! Game did not go our way. Lost 22-6. Next game Saturday @ OLPH.

Sunday, September 27, 2009

Mustangs vs St Michael Game #3

A picture perfect day for football. The Mustangs hit the road again. This time to St Peter's in Worthington to play St Michael. St Michael scored first and failed on the extra point run. Brendan Cox broke free for about a 6o yard TD run on the next St Matthew drive and after a successful extra point run, the Mustangs had their first lead of the year 7-6. After that turnovers plagued the Mustangs offense. St Michael pulled away for a 25-7 victory. Cameron started at free safety and got a couple snaps at QB. Next week they play the Eastern Green Wave at Hartley High School on the prescription turf.

Monday, September 21, 2009

Game #2 @ Buckeye Valley High School against Delaware St Mary's

A grey rainy Sunday afternoon (fall must be coming) for Cameron's second football game. St Matthew had trouble moving the ball all day. Seemed liked St Mary's was in our backfield the whole game. Final Score 15-0. Cameron played some free safety and took three snaps at QB. Mustangs fall to 0-2. Next Sunday @ St Peter's against St Michael.

Sunday, September 13, 2009

Mustangs vs Northwest Saints Game #1

First game for the Mustangs. One of only two home games for St Matthew. Northwest Saints came to Gahanna. After a a possession each came up empty, the Saints got on the board with a couple 4th down conversions and took an 7-0 lead. The Mustangs drove down field and punched it in. The conversion failed and the score at the half was 7-6 Saints. No scoring in the second half. Even though the boys lost, they showed some improvement from the first scrimmage. Next game next Sunday at Buckeye Valley high school against Delaware St Mary's.

St Matthew vs St Catherine Scrimmage

First football action of the season. Great night and the Mustangs visited St Catherine's on the east side near Bexley. Boys had fun and saw what they need to work on before their first game on Sunday. Cameron started at Free Safety and played 2nd at QB.

Jersey

Cameron is settling in at QB for the St Matthews football team. He is having a great time and really enjoys his coaches and teammates. We are very thankful for this football season. It has served as a much needed diversion for the entire family. Cameron received his game jersey tonight (#16 in your program). Weigh in this Saturday and a scrimmage Tuesday at St Catherine.

First Day of School

Another summer gone :(. First day of school. Griffin will be riding the bus by himself this year. Cameron has to go in earlier because of being on the safety patrol squad. Cameron is going into 5th grade (king of the school!!) with Mrs Miller-Wiard. Griffin is in second grade with Miss Hurte. Ready for a great year!!

St Matthew Football Practice

Cameron is playing football for St Matthew this fall. He is taking snaps at QB, playing safety and wide receiver. He has been through a week of camp and is now into his 3rd week of practice. He is loving it!! He is wearing practice jersey number 19. Not sure what game number he will get (of course we all know he is wanting 14).

Timber Rattlers vs Sea Dogs

Game 2 for for the Rattlers vs the Sea Dogs last Saturday. The Rattlers slowly jumped out to a modest lead. Then the 5th inning came. The Sea Dogs had trouble throwing strikes. The Rattlers scored 20 runs that inning and went on to win 31-6. Griffin reached base once via a walk. Rattlers go to 2-0 and play again on Wednesday.

Timber Rattlers vs Grasshoppers

Griffin's first game of Fall Baseball. All kid pitch. He was called up once to this league in the spring and got a hit, but he struggled this game. Struck out looking his first 3 times and walked the fourth time up. He also had to get used to the cage face mask for the first time as the league has mandated them (who is the freakin president of this league??). His team won 14-1. Great game on a hot day!

Reds Game vs Washington 8/14/09

What a great time! I was given 4 tickets and a parking pass from a friend Greg Williams as a thank you for my work with the baseball league. He told me they were real nice and the food was included with the ticket. We were excited, but that excitement went to a whole new level when we got there. We were in a suite. INCREDIBLE!! The Reds continued to stink, but the night was great! Fireworks after the game were real good also. THANK YOU GREG!!!

Football

Cameron's first day of practice after last weeks camp. Very muggy, but at least it was overcast. Cameron got his helmet and mouth guard. He had a lot of fun and one one of the few kids that wore his helmet through the drills. He took plenty of snaps at QB and ran the ball a lot in the drills. Have to mold the mouth guard tonight.

Football Time

Cameron had St Matthew football camp for 4 days this past week. Had fun and learned a lot. Time to get to work this week. Practice starts and like it was waiting, on queue, the heat is here. I may run some drills with them, could use the pound drop!

August Board Meeting GJLS Board Nominations

In one of the biggest non kept secrets known to man. I was nominated to take over as President of Gahanna Junior League Sports. My term begins September 1st. Nervous, but very excited to take on the challenge. Have many ideas that I would like to implement for the boys and girls and Gahanna.

Groveport U8 Coach Pitch Tourney

Final tournament for this years U8 Gahanna Lions Rec All Star Tournament Team. 4 teams (Groveport, Gahanna, Chillicothe Vipers, Vallery Ford from near Circleville). 3 round robin games and then seeding. First up for the Lions were the hosts Groveport Cruisers. The Lions played great defense after allowing 4 runs in the first. The offense had a couple nice innings and pulled out an 11-4 victory.

Next up was Vallery Ford (bunch of freaking chattering hillbillies). A close game all the way with Gahanna edging Vallery 6-5.

Next up was the last pool game against the Chillicothe Vipers. This without a doubt is a team that has played together for a long time. They just had hit after hit, after hit. Final 17-1. Gahanna received the 2 seed and a rematch with Vallery Ford. This was real bad. but the story here was not how Vallery Ford's bats exploded. It was how classless these coaches were. Up 20 runs they kept taking the extra bases. Final 29-1. We were all glad the Vallery went on to get run ruled in the Championship game assholes!

Sunday morning Gahanna faced Groveport for 3rd place. Gahanna scored 2 in the first, 2 in the second and 2 in the 5th. Groveport was only able to get 2 in the 4th. Gahanna won 3rd place medals 6-2!

A great tournament month for the boys. 4 tournaments played, 2- 2nd place finishes and 1- rd place. 7 of the 12 kids on this years team were 7 years old and eligible to tryout again next year. GREAT JOB BOYS!!

U8 Team @ Baltimore Coach Pitch Tournament

A weekend in booming Baltimore, Ohio. 4 Team round robin format. Best record after 3 games wins. Trophies for first and second place.

First game Friday against the Northridge Vikings. Gahanna plated 1 in the top of the first. Northridge pushed across 4, 4-1 Northridge after 1. No more runs socred in the game. A very quick emotionless 4-1 loss. Next game Saturday vs Baltimore Lions at 10:00am.

Second game against Baltimore was a very different story. Gahanna busted out the bats and whopped Baltimore 23-3. The third game against Southwest Licking Warriors Was going into the top of the 3rd inning with Gahanna up 3-1 when the skies opened up and put the park under water. We were done for the day. all 4 teams thought it was silly to drive all the way back to play 4 innings and then go back home. Northridge was 2-0 and Gahanna and Southwest Licking were 1-1 after 2 games. Gahanna was awarded 2nd place. Next weekend, final tournament at Groveport.

Gahanna U8 Coach Pitch Tournament

One of my favorite weekends of the year. I get to run the Gahanna U8 Coach Pitch Tournament at Academy Park. A long weekend of hard work, but soooo worth it. We had 6 teams last year and this year we jumped to 12. 3 game guarantee. 2 Pool games each and then single elimination.

Gahanna drew a good Plain City team first under the lights Friday night. Plain City showed why they finished 3rd in the Teays Valley tournament by winning 10-1. Next up Saturday morning was another Lions squad, this one from Bexley. A close game that Gahanna pulled out 10-5. The 1-1 record and the 15 runs allowed gave Gahanna the #4 seed and a first round bye in elimination.

Sunday morning the #5 seed Crossroads team came and the Lions played great defense and knocked them off to move into the semifinals against #1 seed New Albany. This was a close game, a couple keys hits in the top of the 6th and the Lions prevailed 7-6 to move into the championship against #2 seed Plain City.

The championship game was a carbon copy of the Friday night game. The Pioneers played great defense and put together a few rallys. The Lions could not dent the plate. Final 10-0. A great tournament for the boys (3-2). 2nd place out of 12 teams and some hardware to boot! Next weekend at a tournament in Baltimore, OH.

Teays Valley Tournament Games 2 and 3 Lions vs Obetz & Lions vs Chillicothe Orange Crush

Sunday brought great weather for baseball after the monsoon of Saturday. First up was Obetz. Hillbilly chattering by Obetz did not bother the Lions. They run ruled them 14-5 and advanced.

Next up was the #3 seed Orange Crush of Chillicothe. Never been a more fitting name for a team. They could flat hit! Smooth with the gloves also. Gahanna never got going and The Orange Crush cruised to a 16-1 win in 3 innings.

2-1 in their first tournament (First ever for many of these boys). Great job Lions!
Now this week we host the Gahanna Tournament.

U8 Tournament Team Teays Valley Tournament

No games today. Heavy rain in Ashville, Ohio. Will try to get it all in tomorrow. First game at noon.

Friday, July 10, 2009

U8 Tournament Team Teays Valley Tournament Game 1 Lions vs Teays Valley

Griffin's first taste of tournament baseball tonight. Down in Ashville at the Teays Valley tournament. Really did not know what to expect. The one scrimmage they have had went pretty bad. This game got off to a rough start as the Vikings took a 9-3 on the Lions after 2 innings. But the Lions bat exploaded for 6 in the 3rd, 5 in the 4th and 3 more in the 5th to run rule Teays Valley 17-9. Griffin played right field once and caught twice. He was 1 for 2 including.....

PROUD DAD MOMENT!!!....

Wait for it...

A 2 Run Home Run in the 4th inning. Thought I might cry! Next game tomorrow against New Albany.

Game #41 American Conference Championship Lions vs Hilliard Panthers

Last game of the season. A rematch against the Hilliard Panthers for the U10 COYBL American Conference Championship. Lions come in 26-13-1, Panthers record is 22-14. The teams met back on May 7th with the Lions winning 10-8. Hilliard used 7 successful bunts to keep the game close then. Needless to say, we spent about an hour on bunt coverage at practice on Tuesday night.

The weather was perfect and Cael Baker got off to a great start getting Panthers out 1,2,3 in the top of the first. The Lions jumped all over Hilliard, scoring 6 in the bottom half. Cael kept rolling on the mound (only allowing 2 hits over 4 innings). The Lions added 2 in the 2nd, and 2 in the 4th to win by run rule 10-0. What a fabulous way to end a great season. 27-13-1, Division and Conference Champions!!

Can't wait for 2010!!!!!!!!

Game #40 Sylvania Tourney Game 4 Lions vs Dearborn Knights (Michigan)

Kind of a bummer mood. Seemed like the two things the Lions needed to happen to make this a win and qualify for the semifinals was sure to happen. Two of the elite teams just needed to win and we win our game and we were set. The Olentangy Pride were already in the semifinals and saved some of their pitching. They lost 6-4 so we were eliminated. Still the boys went out and gave it their all. One bad inning did them in. Falling 9-8. A fun weekend at the hotel kept the overall mood up and was a memorable trip. The Lions now stand 26-13-1. One game left Thursday at Academy Park against the Hilliard Panthers for the conference championship.

Saturday, July 4, 2009

Game #39 Sylvania Tournament Game 3 Lions vs Ohio Diamondhawks

Without a doubt, the best game the Lions have played this year. The best team that had faced all year. The boys jumped out with 3 runs in the top of the first. You could see the surprise in the Diamondhawks faces when we went up 11-4. Unfortunately the Lions bats went silent after the 3rd inning and the Diamondhawks kept on hitting. The Lions fell 1 run short 12-11. So proud of the boys! Next game Saturday evening against the Dearborn Knights.

Game 38 Sylvania Tournament Game #2 Lions vs Sylvania Copperheads

Second tournament game vs a local team. The Lions bats exploded for 16 runs and cruised to a 16-4 run rule victory. Jackson and Jarod pitched great. Cameron had one hit. Next game Friday against the Elite State Champs Ohio Diamondhawks with their 51-3 record.

Friday, July 3, 2009

Game 37 Sylvania Tournament Game 1 Vs Anthony Wayne Jr Generals

First game in our out of town tournament. The boys appeared to be sleep walking. Fell behind 8-2, but battled back to get a tie 8-8. Cameron struggled with his control the first 2 2/3 innings. Next game later Thursday against the Sylvania Copperheads.

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Game #36 Lions vs Pickerington Predators

Last regular season game at home(Still have the Conference Championship game at home on July 9th against the Hilliard Panthers, EVERYONE NEEDS TO ATTEND!!). The Pickerington Predators came to Academy Park. A rematch of a close tournament game played Memorial Day weekend won by the Predators in a close game. The Lions scored two in the first, two in the second, three in the third to jump out 7-0. Jarod White pitched two scoreless innings to start. Cael Baker matched a scoreless third. Cael struggled a little with his control and a couple bloop hits dropped and the Predators closed to 7-5 after the top of the 4th. Lions used the long ball in the bottom half to boost the lead back to 12-5 and they went on to win 14-10. Cael Baker went deep twice for HR's 12 & 13 on the year. Luke Barber hit bomb #11 on the campaign. Lions go to 25-11. Next up, a fun practice on Wednesday then off to Sylvania, Ohio for our final tournament of the year.

Game #35 Lions @ Columbus Sharks

A Saturday afternoon game for all the marbles!! Two teams with identical 5-2 division records. Winner wins the division and will get to play in conference championship game. Luke Barber started and pitched the first 4 innings masterfully!! Allowing only 1 run. Jackson came in and pitched the 5th but we wanted him to pitch on Monday so he only got two outs before hitting 29 pitches. Cameron finished the 5th and then the 6th. Lions won the game and the division championship 12-7. Jackson Wolf hit his first HR of the season. Luke Barber went deep for the 10th time this season. Jackson also dumped the water cooler on Vince after we won. GREAT WIN!!! U10 Gahanna Lions Division Champs! Has a nice ring to it! Next game Monday against the Pickerington Predators.

Game #34 Lions vs Westeville Wildcats

Next to last division game Thursday night. I was late arriving due to being at the funeral home. When I arrived, the game was tied 8-8 going to the bottom of the 3rd. There was one weather delay due to lightning. Started back up and AJ struggled to hold a one run lead. Westerville took a 14-11 lead after 5 and the weather returned and we had to stop. Next game Saturday @ Columbus Sharks for the division title.

Kevin Jones

The world is just a little less funny today. Kevin is laid to rest and we are left to wonder why? Why such a funny, nice man had to be taken at 39? Still doesn't seem real. Rest In Peace Kevin.......

Game #33 Lions @ Plain City

The Lions traveled west to take on the Plain City Pioneers in a conference game. Gahanna jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Plain City responded with 3 of their own. Stayed 4-3 until the 4th when the Lions exploded for 6 runs. Gahanna added 7 in the top of the 5th and cruised to a 17-5 win. Jarod White was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI to pace the offense. Cameron picked up his 6th win, battling some stomach issues in the heat. Justin Beachy came in and pitched the 5th for his first pitching appearance of the year. Next game, Thursday, division game against Westerville at home.

Sunday, June 21, 2009

Game 32 State Tournament Game #3 Lions vs Butler County Bandits

What a masterful pitching effort turned in by Jackson Wolf and Luke Barber. They combined to only give up 2 hits and 3 runs, striking out 15 Bandits batters. The offense managed 7 hits but stranded 6 runners on the bases. A very tough 3-2 loss for the boys ended their dream of a state title. Next game at Plain City on Tuesday.

Game 31 State Tournament Game #2 Lions vs Mid Ohio Bullets 6-19-09

Second pool game in the State Tournament vs Mid Ohio Bullets. Second time facing the Bullets in 8 days (Beat them 11-0 at our place on 6/11). Brandon Wise was on again against the Bullets. A 4 inning shutout and Cael Baker hit a 2 run HR in the first (his 10th of the season). The Lions received the #2 seed in the elimination bracket and play Saturday night.

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Game 30 State Tournament Game Lions vs Strongsville Stallions

YOI! Up at 5:45 and at the field at 7:00 for an 8:00 game to open the State Tournament in Grove City. Strongsville was our first pool game. An 11 run inning in the second put the Lions in control and they cruised to a 14-4 4 inning run rule. Jackson Wolf pitched 3 innings to pick up his 6th win. Luke Barber struck out the three batters he faced in the 4th. Tomorrow at 2:00PM we play the Mid Ohio Bullets in our second pool game.

Playoff Game #2 Rays Vs Red Sox

Well the Rays did their part. They jumped all over the Red Sox 15-1. Now they have to hope the Red Sox will beat the Astros and score at least 3 runs. If both of those things happen, the Rays advance to the semifinals. LETS GO RED SOX!!

UPDATE- The Red Sox did beat the Astros, but the Astros only managed 1 run, so the Red Sox advance on a tie breaker (fewest runs allowed).

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Rays vs Astros Playoffs! 6-16-09

The Rays picked a bad time to have a stinker of a game in the field. Seemed like all the boys were sleep walking. They would get close and then a few more bobbles and they would be done 5 or 6 again. They got it to 17-16 in the top of the 6th, but that was it. Final Astros 17 Rays 16. The Rays have one more pool game tonight. They need to win and hope like mad that the Red Sox beat the Astros on Saturday. Only one of the three advance from their pool to the semifinals.

Monday, June 15, 2009

Game 29 Lions vs Dublin Green Sox

Second time playing the Green Sox of Dublin (played them in game one of the Dublin tourney Memorial Day weekend and prevailed 11-10). Cael Baker still struggled with his command walking 6 batters in 3 innings, but some nice defense allowed him to escape damage with only two runs scored. Brandon Wise pitched a perfect 4th inning. Cael and Brandon combined on a 4 inning no hitter. The Lions bats made sure it was a short game. 3 runs in the first and 9 runs in the third. Lions win 12-2 and push their overall record to 20-9. Next up, State Tournament time beginning Thursday. Cameron pitched in with a couple hits tonight.

Game 28 Lions vs Northridge Vikings

Revenge was on the Lions mind Saturday night as the Northridge Vikings came into town. Last year they blasted us on our field 26-3. This year the Lions were sure to turn the tables.. That they did. Good defense and lively bats led to a 19-9 win. Next up, Monday versus the Dublin Green Sox.

Game 27 Lions vs Grove City Vipers 6-13-09

First game of the day night doubleheader. Great defense. A nice start with 5 runs in the first by the Lions. Pitching again was great and the Lions came out on top 7-6 against a very good Grove City Vipers team. Some bade news with Blaine Barringer on vacation, Luke Barber felt a pop in his knee and had to come out. We were down to 8 so Jackson Wolf's 7 year old little brother Evan wore Griffin's shirt, Cameron's old cleats and Justin Beachy's other pants and filled in. Wouldn't you know it, first batter in the top of the third hit the ball to Evan in right. He charged and threw the kid out at first!! Next up later tonight against Northridge Vikings.

Rays vs Dbacks 6-13-09

Final regular season game for the Rays. The bats made their return. Winning 18-6 and finishing the regular season 10-1 with the number 2 seed in the playoffs. First playoff game is Tuesday.

Game 26 Lions vs Mid Ohio Bullets

Dodged the raindrops and got great pitching from Brandon Wise. He pitched 4 innings of shutout baseball. Lions win 11-0 to go to 17-9 and up their conference record to
9-1. Next game A doubleheader Saturday against the Grove City Vipers and Northridge Vikings.

Rays vs Mets 6-9-09

In the battle for the number one seed in the playoffs. The Rays bats went silent. Their only runs came on Evan Wolf's grand slam. Mets win 9-4. Last regular season game Saturday against the Dbacks.

Griffin's Field Trip/Columbus Zoo

Friday, Griffin's class and the other first grade classes went to the Columbus Zoo for a field trip. Marsha went as a chaperone. They had a great time with great weather and got to see the new baby elephant that was born recently.

Pickerington Tournament

The Lions played in their 3rd tournament of the season in Pickerington. All the games were played at Pickerington North High School. Great weather all weekend made for a wonderful time. Unfortunately the Lions left their bats back in Gahanna. Too many walks and not enough hits did them in on Friday night. New Albany (A team we had run ruled twice) beat the Lions 11-4. This mad the next two pool games, must wins. First game Saturday morning against the Pickerington Tigers started kinda bad. The Lions fell behind 5-1. Cameron pitched the first three innings and pitched okay. The Lions clawed their way back and took the lead in the 5th and held on 8-7. This set up the 3rd and final pool game against Westerville. Going in the Lions knew they had to beat the Wildcats by 14 runs to advance due to the first tiebreaker being runs allowed. The bats stayed quiet and Gahanna fell 9-4. Next up two practices this week and a doubleheader on Saturday at home.

Game 22 Lions vs NCS Raiders

Looked like we might not get to play as the skies looked threatening. But since we were not scheduled to start til 6:30, the light rain that fell was gone before we started. The NCS Raiders were only playing their second game of the season. They appeared over matched from the get go. Brandon Wise pitched the first two innings picking up the win and Josh Oddi the last two. The Lions run ruled NCS 13-3 in 4 innings. Lions are 15-7 now. Next up a practice tomorrow and the Pickerington tournament this weekend.

Monday, June 1, 2009

Game 9 Rays vs Phillies

It was a tougher game indeed for Griffin's Rays. They found themselves down 3-1 after two innings. They kept pecking away and got the gloves going at the same time. They pulled ahead and won 9-3 Griffin had a tough day at the plate going 0 for 3. Next up June 9th against the 2nd place Mets. A championship game preview?? We shall see.

Game 21 Lions vs Union Post 79 Black

A four run first was a sure sign that things were going to go the Lions way today. Luke Barber belted 2 more HR's to give him 9 on the season. Cameron pitched 4 innings giving up one unearned run. The Lions run ruled Union Post 11-1 in 4 innings. Their overall record goes to 14-7. Great day for baseball turned out to be a great team win! Many thanks to Devon Lee from the U9 team who played up with us since Justin and Jarod were sick. Next game Tuesday against NCS Raiders.

Game 8 Rays vs Indians

The Rays were back at it Saturday morning. They offense keeps pounding the ball. 17 more runs scored today. They have scored 118 runs in 8 games. Today they beat the Indians 17-6. Game 20 vs Columbus Sharks

A battle for 1st place in the division as the Lions battled the Columbus Sharks at Academy Park. The rain held off mostly (except for a 10 minute delay in the 4th inning). The Sharks were sparked by an error in the first and second and jumped out to a 6-1 lead. The lone Lions run to that point was Cael Baker's 6th HR of the season. Jackson wolf gave up the 6 runs in 2 1/3 innings (0 earned). The Lions chipped away at the 6-1 lead with 1 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th and took the lead with the bottom of the order leading the way to 4 run 5th to take the lead. Luke Barber shut the Sharks down the last 3 2/3 innings allowing 0 runs striking out 6. Lions win 8-6 and up their record to 13-7, 5-1 in the division. Cameron was 1 for 3 with 2 rbi and 2 sb's. Next up Saturday at home against Union Post 79 Black.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Game 7 Rays vs Marlins

Rays brought the bats out as usual, but the leather was flying tonight! Great defense and timely hitting led to a 12-0 victory over the Marlins to run their record to 7-0. Griffin was perfect at the plate, including 2 doubles. Next up, Saturday morning against the Indians.

Monday, May 25, 2009

Game 19 vs Pickerington Predators

After lightning delays pushed the start back over an hour. The Lions played their 4th game of Dublin memorial tournament against the Pickerington Predators. A close game all the way was highlighted by a tape measure shot to center by Luke Barber, his 7th of the season. 4 runs scored in the top of the 6th by the Predators turned out to be the final blow. Lions go down 13-9 and finish the tourney 3-1 and tied for 5th place out of 16 teams.

Game 17 Vs Carmel Pups (IN) & Game 18 vs Cannon McMillan Wolfpack (PA)

I have never been more proud of a team I have coached than I was today. 2 games right in the middle of the day in heat back to back (12:30 and 2:45). First up was Carmel Pups from Carmel, Indiana. This game was over quick 5 runs in the first two innings lead to a 3 1/2 inning run rule 16-6. Jackson picked up the win going 3 innings, with Cory pitching the last inning. Cameron was 1 for 1 with a walk. Next up was Cannon McMillan out of the Pittsburgh area. We rode Cory's arm for 5 innings. He pitched awesome! Only giving up 3 runs. Brandon pitched the 6th and the Lions won 9-3. We ended up 3-0 in pool play and now move on to the elimination round on Sunday!! With the two wins, The Lions up their record to 12-6.

Game 16 Dublin Tourney vs Dublin Green Sox

Great night for ball. Cameron started on the mound and after a little rough patch in the first inning settled down to throw 3 innings. Cael Baker pitched the 4th and 5th and Jackson came in to earn his first save of the season in the 6th. The Lions built a 12-6 lead and then held on to win the first game 12-11. Cameron colected the win to go 4-0 on the season. The Lions overall record goes to 10-6. Next game is Saturday at 12:30 against The Carmel Hounds (Blue) from Carmel, Indiana. Then a game right after that against a team from the Pittsburgh area.

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Game 6 Rays vs Cubs

Forgot the camera, but the Rays kept rolling. Beat the Cubs tonight 9-5. Griffin pitched the 4th inning and got his first strike out!! Rays are 6-0 now. Next game Tuesday 5/26 against the Marlins.

UPDATE!! One of the AA teams (9 and 10 year old league) needs a player and called up Griffin for tomorrow's game. He will be playing with the Muckdogs.

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Game 15 vs Upper Arlington

A heated 2nd division game in as many days. Upper Arlington jumped out 4-0 in the top of the first and the Lions answered with 4 in the bottom half. Back and forth and a 7 run 5th for Arlington was the key. Luke Barber's 2 HR's and 5 RBI were not enough as the Lions droped their first division game 15-11. Cameron pitched well in his one innning of work in the 6th. The Lions stand 9-6 overall now with a 4-1 record in the division. Next up is the Dublin Memorial Day Tournament with game one Friday evening against the Dublin Green Sox.

Game 14 @ Westerville

Back to my stomping grounds for a division game against the Westerville Wildcats. The offense was clicking again, and the Lions ran away with the game 16-8. Cameron had a single and then two errors on the play and he was able to walk home. Hopefully the sign of the slump coming to an end. Next game Tuesday night against Upper Arlington.

Saturday, May 16, 2009

Game 13 @ New Albany

Blaine Barringer made his debut on the mound today and pitched very well. 2 innings of efficient pitchng to pick up the win in a 16-4 run rule victory. Jarod White got back on the mound for the first time in a while and pitch 2 innings giving up 0 runs. Defense was solid and Cael Baker belted a grand slam in the 3 inning. Lions go to 8-5 and 3-0 in the Division.

Game 5 Rays vs Red Sox

Another Rays game another big win. 22-12 in 5 innings. Rays go to 5-0!

Friday, May 15, 2009

Game 4 Rays vs Astros

The Rays broke the bats out again. After falling behind 5-0 in the top of the first, the rays banged out 18 runs. Beating the Astros 18-8. The Rays go to 4-0 on the season. Tomorrow against the Red Sox completes the tough stretch of 3 straight days with games. Griffin was 4 for 5 and made a nice snag of a line drive at 2nd base.

Thursday, May 14, 2009

Game 3 Rays vs A's

Close game tonight. Rays came back to win 8-5 to go to 3-0 on the season. Griffin was 2 for 3 and got to pitch his first inning tonight. He struggled a little with his control, but gave up 0 runs. We can work on the control. He made a nice play defensively while pitching. Next up for the Rays is the Astros on Friday.

Sunday, May 10, 2009

Game 2 for the Rays vs Reds

Griffin had his second game on Saturday. They jumped to a 9-2 lead after a 7 run second inning and cruised to a 18-6 win. They are 2-0 now and play Thursday. Griffin was 3 for 4.

Game 12 vs New Albany

The Lions came to play today. A quick 3 1/2 inning (run rule)game. Luke Barber belted his 4th HR of the season, and Gahanna cruised to a 17-7 win. Cameron started and went 2 2/3 innnings and got the win, with Cael Baker finishing up. Cameron was 1 for 2 at the plate. Practice Monday with our next game against another division team in the Columbus Sharks.

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Game 11 vs Hilliard Panthers

A gorgeous night for baseball. The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Jackson shut down the Panthers 1 2 3. Hilliard was a very good bunting team and our boys had not seen the likes of that yet. After a trying inning in the top of the second, the game was tied 5-5. Gahanna scratched across another run in the bottom half to take the lead for good 6-5. Cael Baker went deep for the 4th time on the year with a solo shot in the 3rd. Luke Barber followed in the 5th with his 3rd blast of the year. The Lions pulled out a 10-8 victory to up their record to 6-5. Big division game Saturday at home against New Albany. Cameron is starting on the mound.

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

Game 10 @ Olentangy Braves

Another real nice area. Big houses.... NO FREAKIN FENCE! Slow start by the Lions found them in a 0-6 hole. They kept clawing got back to within 5 going into the last inning, and what an exciting inning it was. We scored 6 to take a 12-11 lead only to have Olentangy plate 2 in the bottom half to lose 13-12. The Lions now stand at 5-5 overall, 3-1 in league, 2-0 in the conference, and 1-0 in the division. Next up, at Conference game with the Hilliard Panthers on Thursday at Academy Park.

Monday, May 4, 2009

Rays vs Mariners

Griffin's first game tonight as his Rays battled the Mariners. He is playing in the A Major division also called half and half. The coaches still pitch to them the first three innings and then the kids pitch to each other the last three. I was pretty nervous when Griff faced a kid pitching the first time, and what happens? He gets plunked in the arm. Just a pained look and off to first he ran (That's my boy!!) He finished 3 for 3 with a double and a nice defensive play at second base. The Rays won 14-6. Next up is the Reds on Wednesday!! WAY TO GO GRIFFIN!!

Sunday, May 3, 2009

Grove City Tournament

A tough day at Windsor Park made tougher by a tough draw. Two of the better U10 teams in the state were placed in our pool. First up after a rained out day Friday and delays on Saturday. We finally got on the field around 5:00 against the Cincinnati Stix. Cael Baker went deep in the top of the first and after 2 innings the Lions led 2-1. A very costly dropped fly ball in left open the flood gates for 4 unearned runs and paved the way for the 8-2 loss. Jackson Wolf and Cael Baker both pitched great but the Lions only managed 3 hits.

Next up was Central Ohio Select. Hitting was suspect again. Pitching was pretty good, but the defense was just not there. The Lions were jumped on and fell in 4 innings 23-3.

The third pool game was scheduled for 8:00am Sunday morning. The Westerville Wildcats however did not want to come back for a meaningless game (their words). Gahanna was awarded a 6-0 forfeit victory but did not qualify for the elimination round.

Next game @Olentangy on Tuesday

Hey Michele! They are making me wear a F'ing mask tonight. Did not know until I got here 30 minutes ago. Should be fun!! NOT!!!!!!!!!

Game #6 @ Upper Arlington Gold

Another exciting game for the Lions. First division game. A 7 run 4th for the Lions broke the game open. But things got hairy in the bottom of the 6th, with darkness setting in (all of the huge houses and fancy cars throughout Upper Arlington and they can not have lights or permanent fences on their fields, a joke). The Lions were up 10-5 and Luke Barber was brought in to close the game. He struggled to find command and a hit batter, a few walks and a double closed the gap to 10-9. They then had the bases loaded and nobody out. It looked real bad for the Lions. Then their batter hit a pop fly to 3rd and an infield fly rule was called and the batter was out. The ball dropped at 3rd and the base coach sent the runner. Cory threw the ball home and that was two outs. Luke struck out the next batter and the Lions escaped with a 10-9 win. Cory Sparks picked up the win, with 3 tremendous innings on the mound. Cameron was 0 for 2 with a sacrifice bunt. The Lions are now 4-2 and 1-0 in the division. I will post pics for this game later. Next up: Grove City tournament, first game Friday against the Westerville Wildcats.

Sunday, April 26, 2009

Game #5 vs Olentangy Braves

Another great game for the Lions. What looked like a runaway game, got close and then the Lions opened it back up. Pulling out a 17-10 win, running their record to 3-2 overall. 1-0 in league play. Cameron started going 2 2/3 innings giving up 8 runs (only 2 earned), striking out 5 and only walking 1. He picked up the win, to go to 2-0. He went 1 for 3. Blaine Barringer went deep for the first time also. Monday brings our first division game and our first game on the road at Upper Arlington. Tons of photos below

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Game #4 vs Southwest Stallions

Great game tonight. Lions win 10-5 against a very good Southwest Stallions team. After falling behind 3-1 early. The Lions rallied for a 6 run 3rd inning, powered by Cael Baker's 2nd HR of the season (a solo shot) to kick off the rally. Cameron pitched an inning of relief to pick up the win, his first decision of the year. Cameron is slated to start Saturday afternoon's division game against Olentangy at Academy Park @1:00. With the win the Lions record stands at 2-2.

Sunday, April 19, 2009

Game #3 vs Central Ohio Sharks

What a perfect night for baseball Friday evening (Well almost). One bad inning with 3 errors did in the U10 Lions. Leading 3-1, 7 unearned runs wasted a great start on the mound by Luke Barber (4 innings and only 1 run and a very efecient 55 pitches with 7 strike outs). Luke also went deep in the bottom of the 6th for his second HR of the year. Lions lose 8-5 and drop to 1-2 on the year. Cameron was 0 for 2. Thursday at home against the Southwest Stallions at 6:15.

Friday, April 17, 2009

Game #3 Tonight vs Central Ohio Sharks

Sleep Study Update (Just for you Michele Kothe)

I guess you can get stats and a reading in a sleep study without going to sleep. I was very surprised to get a call from the Department of Sleep Medicine today. The lady said (As I laughed the entire time) that I slept for 20% of the night and I stopped breathing 15 times. I said, "but I never fell asleep". She said, "Yes it says that here". So now I get 3 Lunesta pills and get to take one each night two nights before I go back on 4/30 and then take one that night also. JOY! I hope I can get 30 wires off of me this time. More cool robot looking pictures to come!!

Lions 35 Columbus Longhorns 2

Yes the Lions U10 travel team won their game 35-2 in 4 innings yesterday against the Columbus Longhorns. While these kids had really cool uniforms (they look like they were straight out of Austin, Texas), they are going to have a long year on the field. As soon as Cory Sparks hit a 2 run HR in the first inning, you could see their confidence drop. We played 4 innings and pitched 4 kids. 3 of them struck out the side. They only managed one hit while the Lions banged out 22. Joining Cory with a tape measure shot HR (had to go at least 250), was Cael Baker. Cameron went 3-4 with 4 RBI and 4 runs scored. Next up, Central Ohio Sharks on Wednesday at Academy Park.

Game #1 vs Eastside Irish 4/4/09

Opening day. After driving to play the Eastside Irish at their place and seeing their crap fields (unplayable), we drove back to Gahanna and played at our field and let them be the home team. Pitching struggled, we walked 14 batters. Luke Barber crushed his first HR of the season. Tough loss though 17-14. The kids did not quit when we were down 10-5. We came back and tied it up, but the walks continued to dig us in holes. We had 9 hits and played alright in the field. Cameron was 0 for 2 at the plate with a walk and a run scored. We have a scrimmage scheduled for Tuesday, but it is supposed to drop back into the 30's again Monday and Tuesday. Looks like we will have to wait until next Saturday for our next game against the Columbus Longhorns.

U10/U11 Scrimmage (Or if you like Benchwarmers...Scrimimmage)

First game action, as the U11 Lions were nice enough to come scrimmage us. Some positives and negatives came out of it. I am just glad that the boys got to see live pitching from other kids and not coaches before our first game on Saturday. Was great to be out playing ball!!

How do you lay awake in the dark for over 3 hours??

YOU WEAR THIS CRAP!!!!!!!!!!

Had my "experience" of a sleep study last night. Had about 14 wires attached to my head. Two things up my nose. A snore mic taped to my neck. Three straps across my chest, 2 wires connected to each leg and a temp sensor on my index finger. The guy seemed surprised after for 3 hours I laid in the dark. He came in and asked: "James are you having trouble sleeping?" I felt like I should say, No! Call Guinness, I think I may have set a record for staring at the ceiling in the dark while having 22 wires attached to me and I want to talk to them. HERE'S YOUR SIGN! Tool. I left at 1:15. I will deal with the apnia and heart attack.

First Scrimmage Scheduled for Wed 3/25

First Outdoor Practice Sat 3/21

Outdoors at Academy Park!! Music to my ears! The sound of balls hitting bats and gloves really puts a smile on my face. The boys had some spring in their steps. You can see they're excited as well. Welcome Spring! We missed you!

Yes We Are Still Alive

Been busy with the boys school work and Cameron playing on two baseball teams (Saturday's are real fun with two practices for him). Griffin is chomping at the bit to get out on the field with his team. He will have 7 kids from his team last year on his team this spring. Also Tyler and Evan will be on his team so it looks like he will have a real good team. Tyler's dad Eric Jones is taking over my team since I am busy with travel ball and field and board duties (Find me at a field from now until October!). SOOOOO PSYCHED that spring is almost here!!

Oh! and if you are in the market for mulch, give me a holler. Cameron's travel team is selling mulch to help with tournament costs and travel.

Griffin's Basketball Award Ceremony

Loud music, spotlights and a full house for Griffin's basketball award ceremony this afternoon. Means a few good things and one bad. The bad, basketball is done for the boys after a fun season. The good, March is here and baseball is kicking into gear. Former 2002 National Champion Buckeye footballer Stan White Jr was the guest speaker and the kids were in awe.

Josh's Birthday OSU Hockey

Great night at the Schott for the OSU hockey game. Entire U10 team came to celebrate Josh's 10th birthday. The bucks fell in a 4-1 and 6-3 hole and made it close at the end, but lost 7-5 to Miami, Ohio. Great night and tons of laughs (especially Luke Barber's Austrailian accent). Should be a memorable spring and summer. Happy Birthday Josh!

Tough Loss

A tremendous season of growth and improvement on the basketball court came to an end today @ St James against another St Brigid team. The Mustangs were able to get plenty of shots but those shots were tough to get to stay down. St Matthew White ends the season 8-2 after a tough 21-16 loss. Cameron had his best all around game today, with 2 points, 3 rebounds and a only one turnover while playing the whole game. We are so proud of his hard work this season.

Great Season: Blaine, Cameron, Elias, Grant, Jacob, Jared, Patrick, Wil and Coach Steve and Coach Dennis

Another Busy Sunday

Another busy Sunday. Cameron has a fundrasier at Kroger. He then has his first playoff game @ 4:30 and the boys have religion class at 6:15. I begin my 6+ months of severe multi-tasking. Baseball registrations beging today from 1-3 at the Gahanna Golf Course.

GO MUSTANGS!!

Saturday, February 14, 2009

Lakers Vs Sixers

Griffin back in action this morning. He got one of his shots to fall today. A couple rebounds and the coolest looking kid on the court with his headband.

Sidenote: Congrats to Neal and Michele! Found out they are having a boy and a girl!! How cool!

Playoffs Announced

Cameron's team opens their playoffs on Sunday at St.James @ 4:30 against another St Brigid team. If they win that they play at All Saints Academy on Sat 2/21, win that and they play for the championship on Sun 2/22 @ 12:30 @ St Paul. LETS GO MUSTANGS!!

Sunday, February 8, 2009

St Matthew vs Immaculate Conception

Some things seem to stay the same. St Matthew win another game and I have my damn cold back again. Seems my antibiotics didn't kill what I have. AS for the game, the Mustangs rode Patrick's hot shooting and Jared's excellent rebounding to a convincing 22-10 win that was not that close. They opened up a 22-2 lead and took most of their starters out for the 4th quarter. I was ready to slap the scorekeeper for IC. I was at the table and she kept saying "Hey! has #24 (Patrick) sat out a quarter yet? I said, he sat out a couple minutes in the 2nd quarter. She said he needs to sit out a whole quarter. I said no, everyone has to play a whole quarter minimum. There is no rule for sitting. Accept that your little Billy (or whatever the heck his name is) plays for a team that can't score.

St Matthew White ends the regular season 8-1 and we will find out who we play in the first playoff game on Wednesday. The Diocese splits the tourney into 3 brackets. All of the upper teams in one (us). The middle teams in another bracket and the lower teams in a 3rd. We should have a tough game right out of the gate.

Saturday, February 7, 2009

Lakers vs Sonics

The Lakers has the offense clicking today. Evan Wolf led the way with 5 baskets and Griffin chipped in 4 hoops, while Tyler Jones had a gang of rebounds. A lot of energy for and 8:00am start. Way to go Lakers!!

SIX-BURGH!!!!

St Matthew vs St Paul 2-1-09

The boys got off to a slow start Sunday (may have been tired since this was the first weekend with two games this year). They fell behind the Rams 5-0 before closing to 5-4 at the end of 1. The defense really clamped down for the Mustangs after that. Holding St Paul to only 5 points the rest of the game and winning 19-10. Cameron had 2 points (and 4 fouls ha!). St Matthew White is 7-1 now. Next week is the last regular season game against Immaculate Conception on Sunday at 3:00 @ St Paul.

Bowling with The Beachy's & The Oddi's

What fun we had bowling tonight. 12 of us in all and we all bowled 3 games. The kids all bowled on one lane and then the adults on the other. Ryan bowled with the adults and the married couples bowled in team alternating frames. The Beachy's pulled out the first game and Marsha and I won the second two. Including a 197 the second game (not bad for not bowling for a number of years, I may have not since Griffin was born!) We all agreed that it was a blast and want to do it again. Now to bed to get ready for Super Sunday and Cameron's hoops game!

Lakers vs Bucks 1/31/09

Griffin and his Lakers were back in action today against the Bucks. Griffin was really active on the boards and had two baskets today! Great job Griff!

St Matthew vs St Andrew 1/31/09

A great matchup of two one loss teams. St Matthew played great 4th quarter defense and were led by Blaine's 13 points for a 22-21 win. Cameron was given the task of shadowing #4 from St Andrew in the 4th quater and shut him down. He was on fire in the 3rd and Cameron knew what kind of gum he was chewing by the end of the 4th. The Mustangs go to 6-1. Another game tomorrow against another good team in St Paul at 5:00.
